Chestnuts take much less time to “roast” in an air fryer than in the oven (or on an open fire) and still pick up the nutty-toasty flavour you love. You’ll need to follow a few steps for success. First, be sure to score the chestnuts’ shells; otherwise, they might explode and make a mess inside your air fryer. Second, soak them in hot water for a few minutes before air-frying to make them easier to shell. Third, be sure to add water to the air fryer to create steam so the chestnuts don’t dry out in the arid heat.

Ingredients

Uncooked European chestnuts

1 pound(s)

Instructions

  1. Place each chestnut flat side down on a cutting board; cut 2 slits in the shape of an “X” into the rounded side of each chestnut’s shell, trying not to cut down into the flesh. In a large bowl, combine the scored chestnuts with enough hot water to cover. Let stand for 10 minutes.
  2. Preheat an air fryer, if necessary, to 375°F. Drain the chestnuts. Pour 1 cup of water into the base of the air fryer basket. Add the chestnuts to the basket and place inside the base. Air-fry until the shells start to peel back where they were scored and the chestnuts smell nutty-fragrant, about 10 minutes. Serve warm.
  3. Serving size: 3 to 4 chestnuts
